As the National Science Foundation’s Artist in Antarctica, I journeyed to and photographed the coldest, windiest, driest, most remote continent on Earth—now an important bellwether for the health of our planet.
Set against this pristine landscape, Midnight Sun, portrays various polar phenomena such as giant skuas; the solemn huts of the early explorers, Shackleton and Scott; 10,000 year old mummified seals; otherworldly ice and cloud formations and the most incredible place I've ever seen—a translucent, back-lit ice cave with 20 foot ice crystals protruding from the ceiling. The image that came to mind was like standing inside a frozen blue and white nuclear explosion.
Midnight Sun is unique in my repertoire of photochoreographies in that it utilizes one screen rather than my usual three. Four projectors are focused on a single screen allowing for multiple image overlays that create an abstract, engaging and extraordinary impression of Antarctica. Enhanced by an ethereal score, Midnight Sun portrays that mysterious world at the edge of the earth.
PREMIERE: Honolulu Symphony Orchestra
