I was moved by a radio interview with a man who, along with his wife and children,
decided to forego the baggage of modern life and live instead "a plain life."
Like the Amish, they chose to live without automobiles, television, computers and
most of today's "conveniences." To paraphrase the father,
whereas most people give up their time to have stuff, we've given up our stuff to
have time. And with that newfound freedom they spend their time on what he calls relationships; their
relationship with God, with each other and with "the dirt"—the earth that gives life to us all.
On their small farm in the rolling hills of Amish Country, the family raises heirloom potatoes with hard work and love.
I spent the better part of a growing season with them, documenting their lives, their trials and togetherness, and the simple lessons their way of life provides.
