Often called “the lungs of the earth,” tropical rainforests of the world are rapidly being cut down. With Vanishing Forest, I was motivated to share and celebrate the grandeur of what remains of this life-giving ecosystem. Photographed in the jungles of Central America, the piece captures the region's impressive biodiversity through its lyrical flowers, cloud-filled canopies, cascading streams and undergrowth brimming with every imaginable shade of green.
Vanishing Forest premiered with the Milwaukee Symphony Orchestra as part of their highly successful "Song of the Rainforest" concert series. Because of the subject matter and its timeliness, the concerts generated a collaboration between the orchestra and many community partners including the Milwaukee Public Museum, the University of Wisconsin, the Hispanic Cultural Center, the Milwaukee Nature Center and the Tirembina Nature Preserve in Costa Rica.
Accompanied by its gorgeous, transcendent classical score, Vanishing Forest serves as an uplifting message of beauty and hope for one of our planet’s great natural treasures.
